Google Day #2

My three goals for the day are:

          1. Learn about the treatments of cancer.
          2. Learn the known causes of some cancers.
          3. Learn about the classification of tumors.

  1. Learn about the treatments of cancer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer: / http://www.cancer.gov: These articles talk about all the ways you can treat cancer (especially tumorous cancers). The treatments used by doctors all over the world are the following

Radiation/Radiotherapy: In this treatment the patient is exposed to extreme radiation directly to the part of the body where the tumor relies. The radiation kills the DNA of the cancer cells directly. Just like chemotherapy, it also damages healthy cells, so the therapy needs to be controlled. Radiation only is 100% effective when the cancer is below Stage 2 and if the cancer is not located on organs like: stomach, pancreas, liver, colon, lungs.

Chemotherapy: This is the most common treatment for cancer because it has been proven that it is effective in reducing the size of tumors. Various rounds (sessions) of chemotherapy are taken by the patient (depending where the cancer is located and in what stage is it). Chemotherapy is applied by an injection that leads a mixture of different toxic chemicals into the body. But there is a downside to this method of treatment. The chemicals do not attack the cancer cells only, but the entire body (that's why your hair falls off for example). This treatment is harsh but it can and it has helped many people all overt the world.

Surgery: This method is really simple. Surgical removal of tumor has been proven 100% effective when the cancer is below Stage 2. A combination of chemo and surgery is also an effective method of treatment. Many doctors apply direct chemotherapy when the patient is still open on the table to kill any cancer cells that might reproduce after the procedure has concluded.

Transplantation: The most common transplantation is stem cells. Bone marrow transplant is a common treatment for patients with leukemia and lymphoma. Also, umbilical chord blood transfusion is 95% effective for people with these two types of blood cancer. The umbilical chord is frozen after birth to preserve the blood inside it for later use. People might be a match to another person chord blood.

Hyperthermic Therapy: This is a surgical procedure in which a probe is implanted into the tumor. The probe is controlled by a machine that makes the probe itself heat up into really high temperatures (up to 50 degrees Centigrade). The hope is that the heat kills the tumor cells for later using surgery to remove the rest of the tumor that survived.

 2. Learn the known causes of some cancers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer:

Chemicals: The origin of some cancers have been studied and doctors came to the conclusions that some cancers develop because of the body's exposure to certain chemicals. The DNA of the cancer cells is trackable for mutations such as: mutagens and carcinogens. For example, all the chemicals inside cigarettes are the #1 proven cause of lung cancer. Alcohol also triggers the development of cancer cells in the liver and the endocrine glands.

Diet and Exercise: The lack of physical activity and obesity are related to approximately 30-35% of cancer deaths around the world (14-20% in the USA). Obesity makes the immune and endocrine system work not the way the should and that is a pathway to cancer. Diets that include low vegetables and high consumption of meats are linked to a high percentage of cancer (especially colon cancer). High salt diets for example are directly linked to gastric cancer.

Infection:
Very few infectious diseases are linked to cancer. The most studied infectious cause of cancer is the HPV (human papilloma virus) which is directly the cause of cervical carcinomas in women. Men can also contract the virus but they will not develop the growth of cancer cells. Statistically, 8-10 women are infected with HPV. More than half of these women that are infected do not show symptoms at all.

Radiation: Ionizing and non-ionizing radiation cause 10% of all invasive cancers. The most common cancer caused by the exposure of radiation is leukemia (many of the survivors of Hiroshima's and Nagasaki's bombs were diagnosed with leukemia because of the radiation of the bomb). Ultraviolet radiation (non-ionizing) is a very common cause of skin cancer. The most common non-ionizing radiation cancer is the nevoid basal cell carcinoma (type of skin cancer).

Heredity: Some cancers can be hereditary and some are not ("sporadic cancers"). Hereditary cancers are the ones caused by an inherited genetic defect. Some of these syndromes include: certain inherited mutations in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 that carry a 75% risk of breast cancer, non-polyposis colorectal cancer and ovarian cancer.

Physical Agents: Some of the substances that cause cancer are not chemical, but physical. The exposure to asbestos, naturally occurring mineral fibers which are the major cause a mesothelioma (lung cancer). Asbestos that are introduced to the body by the air way take up approximately 10 years to develop.

Hormones: Some hormones play a role in the development of cancer by promoting cell proliferation. An unbalanced hormone level in the body can cause the development of cancer in the breast, prostate, ovary, testicles, thyroid gland, and bones. The children (daughters) of women that have had breast cancer have significantly higher levels of estrogen and progesterone. These high levels of hormones make these girls more vulnerable to the development of breast cancer.

 3. Learn about the classification of tumors.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer:

Carcinoma: These are tumors derived from epithelial tissue. This group includes many of the most known cancers (mostly in the aged people) such as: breast, prostate, lung, pancreas, and colon.

Sarcoma: These are cancers arriving from the connective tissue (for example: bone, cartilage, fat and nerve). Each of these end up developing from cells originating from mesenchymal cells outside the bone marrow.

Lymphoma: This and also leukemia arise from hematopoietic (blood-forming) cells that leave the marrow and tend to mature in the lymph nodes of the blood.

Germ Cell Tumor: Cancers that are derived from pluripotent cells (cells that have stem cell power, they can cross the three layers germ layers of the human body: endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm.) They on the most part appear in the testicle or the ovary.

Blastoma: This is a specific type of tumor that are derived from immature "precursor" cells or embryonic tissue. They are more common in children than in older people. '''

          • The next Google day I want to research the ways to create a free application.

Palace of the Light of Faith

If you had the opportunity to sleep in this mind blowing place in all of the 1788 rooms WITHOUT counting 257 bathrooms and the Banquet Hall;

You would have to sleep for 4.89863013699 years. I WANT TO SLEEP THERE

Print What You Like

1. Link: http://www.printwhatyoulike.com/

2. My tech tool is called: "Print What You Like". The purpose of this technological website (it is free) is to be able to print what ever you want that is displayed on your screen (the title itself says that). You need to download it to your computer to have it permanently or you can access the website each time you want to print whatever you want.

3. How to use this website:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJbh_WIivbg (this is a video to help you understand how to use it, it is really simple and fast.)

• First of all you need to create an account to able to use it.

• Go to the place where it says: "Bookmarklet".

• On the first section ("To Install") and click on the link to be able to have it on a bookmark.

• On the bar where it says: "Enter a URL". Put one, and hit the "Start" button on the keyboard.

• The website that you chose will appear on the screen with a "Print What You Like" window on the right portion of the screen.

• Highlighter whatever you want to print out on the website displayed on the rest of the screen that is not occupied.

• Manipulate with the other tools (all of them can be found in the PWYL window) and do whatever you want or should do.

• Hit the "Print" button on the PWYL window.

Approve the preview, select a printer (if you have one) and print.

• Have fun using this website!

4. Example:

In this snapshot you can see various things. for example:

The entire screen in which you are working on.

• The website you want to print and the PWYL window to work on it.

• The tool you can use to manipulate the website when you print on the PWYL window.

• The yellow part is the highlighted part that are going to be printed when you print.

Here is an example of another website where only one part of the actual text in going to be printed (shaded in yellow).

5. How students can use this:

Well, imagine you are doing a homework. You have to print an e-mail that your teacher sent you. I bet it has happened to all of us, that when you print an e-mail the entire display is printed. But with this tool you can actually select the part of the e-mail (or whatever your homework is) that you want to print and leave out the things you want to leave out.

My second example has happened to me various times. When you are going to print from a graphic website (www.biodigitalhuman.com for example) you are not able to print from the website when you hint print directly from your computer. Teacher nowadays don't consider: "I couldn't print it!" an excuse. So to prevent further fights you can use this tech tool. As I said earlier in this post; you need to put the URL of the exact thing you want to print, select it suing the mouse, and print it.

This is a very simple tech tool to use. It doesn't involve a lot steps and honestly I doesn't require rocket science to figure this out. From now own I am going to use this to print a lot of things.

Digital Nation

Agreements:

1. I agree that the internet and almost every single electrodomestic device are useful for almost every single task and that they should be encouraged in school because it is a new and effective way of education.

2. I also agree that in families people are feeling desconnected because of texting and the internet because almost every member of the family is connected to these all the time, which makes direct dialouge imposible.

3. I think it is correct when they say that teachers are feeling doubtful in putting assigments online because students are getting distracted easily because of all the things they can do in a computer or an electronic device instead of homework.

4. I agree that people should be tought how to use a computer responsibly to ge the things that need to get done, done. Everybody that uses technology a lot may be having problems with this.

5. I agree that people shouldn't multitask because the brain can't handle doing to things simultaniously (scientifically and medically proven by neurologists). They are reaserchs that say that multitasking might be damaging our brains.

6. I agree that sometimes technology affects your communication skills because you now communicate in a different way, and the people that are not use to this new ways of communication are being negatively rammificated.

7. I agree with the MIT teacher that says that the way that they teach with technology has changed because now they have access to a lot of different things. This is reflected in the exams that they do when they need tyo use technology.

8. I agree that now you can go on the internet and solve any doubt or question you have on your mind by just typing it on google and reading evberything that pops out.

9. I agree that people should spend less time on the internet in pages that are not education related for their own good (facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc...)

10. I agree that the quality of the work that studentsd make when they are simultaniously doing something on the net because the distraction makes the quality and even the quantity worst.

11. I agree that technology is a two faced thing because it can be the best thing in the world but it can also cause an addiction because you can see that people start going crazy (literally) whe  they don't have access to the technology decives that they normally used.

12. I agree with Bubbe (cooking grandma) because she is a victim of the poeple that start becoming addicted to the technology devices and she feels the ways of communication are being affected by this. She feels lonely (she feels the gao between her, technology, and other people.)

13. I do agree that playing any video games on a dailyu basis and 4 hours  a day for example is a bad thing because then they create an addiction to playing these and not for doing productive things.

14. I agree that technology offers a way of connection with your friends that is often a lot easier because you can communicate in different ways easier, but it also healthy to make other plans with your friends apart from using technology

15. I agree with the man that syas that internet doesn't really bring people together but it makes being alone less lonely. Meaning that now being alone is more bearable. Being don't really feel alone when they are actually alone.

16. I agree that now people use the internet to do the things or say the things that they don't dare to say face to face. People hide behind their computer screens to be a different perosn and to create a different identity when they are using their computer. Now you don't know who they really are.

Disagreements:

1. I disagree that the education on technology devices should be stopped because it is an amazing way to learn in a more complex way because you have the gate to almost every single resource available in the internet.

2. I disagree that using the internet on a dialy basis is equal or more dangerous to drunk driving because in srunk driving you can literally die out of an accident and in using internet on a dialy basis (irresponsibly) you are just lowing the quality of brain capacity that is still bad but you cannot compare it to that.

3. I disgaree that video games are 100% bad because they have the posibility to explore a fantasy world that they never can live in the real world. It is OK to play video games sprangly (not on a daily basis). Bercause it is a way of spending your free time.

4. I disagree that making students learn how to use a computer at the same time they are learning how to read (education in South Korea) is bad because they end up being the masters of technlogy, and in the world of today a person that knows how mto use a computer well has the gates of knowledge opened forvever. AS LONG AS they teach them to use them responsibly.
