iCloud

          The only thing I know about the iCloud is that it is a system created by Apple Inc. that allows you to download purchases you have made in other apple devices to the apple device you wish for free.

1. How do you configure your own iCloud?
2. Where does the iCloud system store the information of the purchases. 
3. When was the iCloud created? Why?

Things I learned: 

• The iCloud doesn't just store the purchases you have made in the iTunes store (music, shows, movies, rents, etc.,) but also your notes, calendars, photos and even the contacts in your phone. 

• If you have your iCloud actively installed in your phone for example, when you take a picture it automatically copies that image that you have just taken and downloads it to the other Apple devices that have the iCloud installed. 

• To have the iCloud working effectively you need to have something called an iTunes Match which is the system within the iCloud that matches the purchases and downloads them into all the Apple devices that you wish because you have the option of making the shares and downloads optional. 

• iCloud has something called "Find My Friends" which is very similar to the application "Find my iPhone" and the purpose of this is to find the location of your friends that also have the "Find My Friends" application on their iCloud on whatever device. 

• For this system to work you need to have the iCloud installed first on your iTunes account in a computer for it to be able to work on the devices that you sync with that same computer. Otherwise you won't be able to have it in any apple device apart from your computer which needs to be the initial machine. 

• The iTunes Match itself is not free because initially you have to pay $24.99 when you buy it and every year since. the price of $24.99 is only for the United States. For other regions it is about $20. 

• The iCloud only works on for apple devices with IOS 5 or IOS 6. Apple devices with other operative systems that came before these won't be able to work with the iCloud and you need to re-buy your previous purchases to have them on that device. 

• This system you are able to work on a paper and each time it is saved, it is saved on all the devices you have the iCloud synced in. This is a very useful application for school students because they can work on that same assignment on various devices without the use of sending the things my email 1000 times.  

• The iCloud was launched by Apple Inc. October 12, 2011. As of January 2013 it has served more than 250 million users. 


Summary: Since I have 5 Apple devices, having this system really helps me because I download television shows and movies that I can watch in both computers (both in different houses) and I don't need to worry on which computer is my daily episode located. Also, for the Documents it is really useful too because I can work on my school papers and projects wherever I am on whatever Apple device I have in the hand. 


Questions: 

• Are there other systems like the iCloud but for other devices apart from Apple?

• Will Apple upgrade the iCloud?

Radiology Machines (Imaging)

          I know a lot about this topic, it is one if my life interests. Even though I know like it a lot and despite my knowledge, I want to research them even further.

Things I learned: 

X-radiation is a form of electromagnetic energy that is used to have a clear view of the strong masses of the human body (bones generally) to detect fractures and/or abnormal activities in organs like the lungs. 

Large/long/repetitive exposures to X-radiation is dangerous for the human body because the radiation that the X-rays emit can generate abnormalities. Usually when you have an X-ray the scan takes at least 10 second to get out one image (shot time). 

Pregnant women are not allowed to take any medical test involving electromagnetic energy (such as X-rays) because it can damage the fetus permanently. To scan the baby during pre-natal care, doctors use an ultrasound because the wavelength of sound cannot damage the fetus. 

A CT scan (computerized tomography) is a scan that doctors use to see a clear view of the organs of the body. The CT machine also uses electromagnetic energy, but they are sent in a different way than the ones in a normal X-ray. 

The CT scan shows the human body cut into "slices" or cross sections to see the different parts of the body in numerous slides. This way they can detect tumors and other abnormal masses growing in any part of the body. Radio contrast agents can modify the contrast of the image to the doctors choice. 

You can order different types of CT's. There are general CT's in which you can see the entire body with or without cross-sections. There are head CT's in which you can only see the brain (no cross sections). And sometimes you can have an abdominal CT or an extremity CT. 

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is another radiology exam to see the inner structures of the human body. The important difference is that the MRI uses magnetic energy that gives the image a lot more detail than the CT. 

There is a type of MRI that are called NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) that are used with nuclear energy to be able to visualize the nuclei of the cells inside the body. You can also visualize molecules inside the body. 

When a fetus is diagnosed with an abnormality using an ultrasound, obstetricians use a fetal MRI. This is a normal MRI you perform on a fetus inside the uterus of a woman. You obviously reduce the amount of energy used since the fetus is small. This way you can have the clearest image of what the problem is. 

A PET scan (positron emission tomography) is another type of imaging used in medicine. It is a nuclear energy machine that uses a small percentage of gamma rays that indirectly emits radionuclide. This lets you see 3D images of the inner structures of the body. 

This is a test mostly used to detect cancer metastasis (when cancer spreads from it's original place of development to other places in the body). A color coded image use used to detect metastasis or other structures of your choice. 

Just like X-rays; PET scans should be performed on a regular basis because the gamma rays used in the test can damage the body permanently if the body is exposed to them lots of times. Gamma rasy are one of the waves (rays) that have the most concentrated wavelengths. 

An EEG test (electroencephalography) is the recording of electrical activity along the scalp. The test measures voltage resulting from ionic current flows within the neurons. The main diagnosis made using this type of test are cases of epilepsy. 

It is used by putting many little probe receptors in the scalp of a person. From there, you connect them to wires to be able to release the energy that is going to let you know the electrical activity of the neurons. 

This test is also used to be able to confirm the diagnosis of encephalopathy and delirium which are diseases of the brain that are all related to the electrical charges that the neurons have inside the brain, just like epilepsy. 


Summary: I believe this type of advanced technology applies to my life because I want to be a surgeon when I grow up so I am going to need to be familiarized with these machines for the well-being of my future patients. I guess it applies to everybody's life because these machines allow doctors to diagnose diseases that are treated every day.

• How is anybody able to put electromagnetic energy inside a machine and control it?

Digital Nation

Agreements:

1. I agree that the internet and almost every single electrodomestic device are useful for almost every single task and that they should be encouraged in school because it is a new and effective way of education.

2. I also agree that in families people are feeling desconnected because of texting and the internet because almost every member of the family is connected to these all the time, which makes direct dialouge imposible.

3. I think it is correct when they say that teachers are feeling doubtful in putting assigments online because students are getting distracted easily because of all the things they can do in a computer or an electronic device instead of homework.

4. I agree that people should be tought how to use a computer responsibly to ge the things that need to get done, done. Everybody that uses technology a lot may be having problems with this.

5. I agree that people shouldn't multitask because the brain can't handle doing to things simultaniously (scientifically and medically proven by neurologists). They are reaserchs that say that multitasking might be damaging our brains.

6. I agree that sometimes technology affects your communication skills because you now communicate in a different way, and the people that are not use to this new ways of communication are being negatively rammificated.

7. I agree with the MIT teacher that says that the way that they teach with technology has changed because now they have access to a lot of different things. This is reflected in the exams that they do when they need tyo use technology.

8. I agree that now you can go on the internet and solve any doubt or question you have on your mind by just typing it on google and reading evberything that pops out.

9. I agree that people should spend less time on the internet in pages that are not education related for their own good (facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc...)

10. I agree that the quality of the work that studentsd make when they are simultaniously doing something on the net because the distraction makes the quality and even the quantity worst.

11. I agree that technology is a two faced thing because it can be the best thing in the world but it can also cause an addiction because you can see that people start going crazy (literally) whe  they don't have access to the technology decives that they normally used.

12. I agree with Bubbe (cooking grandma) because she is a victim of the poeple that start becoming addicted to the technology devices and she feels the ways of communication are being affected by this. She feels lonely (she feels the gao between her, technology, and other people.)

13. I do agree that playing any video games on a dailyu basis and 4 hours  a day for example is a bad thing because then they create an addiction to playing these and not for doing productive things.

14. I agree that technology offers a way of connection with your friends that is often a lot easier because you can communicate in different ways easier, but it also healthy to make other plans with your friends apart from using technology

15. I agree with the man that syas that internet doesn't really bring people together but it makes being alone less lonely. Meaning that now being alone is more bearable. Being don't really feel alone when they are actually alone.

16. I agree that now people use the internet to do the things or say the things that they don't dare to say face to face. People hide behind their computer screens to be a different perosn and to create a different identity when they are using their computer. Now you don't know who they really are.


Disagreements:

1. I disagree that the education on technology devices should be stopped because it is an amazing way to learn in a more complex way because you have the gate to almost every single resource available in the internet.

2. I disagree that using the internet on a dialy basis is equal or more dangerous to drunk driving because in srunk driving you can literally die out of an accident and in using internet on a dialy basis (irresponsibly) you are just lowing the quality of brain capacity that is still bad but you cannot compare it to that.

3. I disgaree that video games are 100% bad because they have the posibility to explore a fantasy world that they never can live in the real world. It is OK to play video games sprangly (not on a daily basis). Bercause it is a way of spending your free time.

4. I disagree that making students learn how to use a computer at the same time they are learning how to read (education in South Korea) is bad because they end up being the masters of technlogy, and in the world of today a person that knows how mto use a computer well has the gates of knowledge opened forvever. AS LONG AS they teach them to use them responsibly.

Biometric Security

          I know absolutely nothing about this topic. Honestly, I don't even know why I chose it.

Things I learned: 

- Biometric security is a way to protect electronic and technological devices by using something from the human body to access it (fingerprint, iris, tongue).

- A device can have many biometric ways of security and some can just have one. Only the person who has it's fingerprint for example registered, is the only one that can access the device.

- Retina scans may interfere with the proper functioning of the device if not scanned properly.

- Gathering the information of the owner of the device (such as his/her fingerprint) is associated with criminal behavior and it can have negative ramifications.

- There are two different types of eye scans (retina and iris). The iris scan is less invasive and less damaging for you eye but weaker. The retina scan is more invasive and more dangerous to the eye itself but a lot safer in terms of security.

- Voice commands are also part of biometric security.

- Fingerprint identification is starting to be used in printers

- Biometric security is now being used in amusement parks that get a lot of visitors to have a better control of their customers.


Summary: 

          Investigating this topic was really interesting because biometric security is one of the most or the most efficient and safe way to have private information away from other people. You can notice that biometric security is used in every single action movie (mostly the ones that have to do with futuristic topics) and nowadays in computers such as Lenovo you can see that they have fingerprint scanners. IN the future maybe passwords won't be used anymore because of this more sophisticated way of keeping information in devices safe. Even here at CNG the gates are incorporating the use of fingerprint to register the entrance to school.

          In how much time will biometric security be used in school computer labs?
