Growing Up Online

         NOTES:

Things that DID NOT surprise me:

• That they are talking about teenagers not being engaged in the family relationships because they are up in their rooms connected to the web.
• That students are having trouble in school because they are not able to concentrate.
• People are now using social networks to up their social status.
• That teachers are now really peaky with the cheatng because of all the opportunity to cheat.
• Now, teachers are usig webistes of their own to tract down cheating in student papers.
• Teachers now use the technique of making their students write their papers in class to take awaythe chance of cheating.
• Students are now having trouble managing their time because they cannot handle their responsibilities (because of their social networks).
• You are not aware of the people that are watching your posts.
• When parents think about social networks, the first thing that comes to their minds is: sexual assault and privacy.
• Cases of cyber-bullying have been emerging rapidley in the US.
• The majority of them ange not ended in suicide, but the rest of them have.
• Parents are know training themselves to able to understand tje social networking.
• Children hide their virtual life from their parents.
• Parents protect heir kids in extremist ways, and some are accepting of their children's internet life.
• It is a lot easier to fight online and not saying things to somebody's face.
• Internet is a double sided weapon.

Things that DID surprise me:

• Since I don't know how to use MySpace, I did not know that you could have an insult fight through this specific social network.
• Kids are now changng their identity to be able to "have" more finds, or at least the feeling that you have more friends.
• Internet sex predators nowadays are more dangerous than the lredators that used to sit down in the park bench.
• Internet sexual assault is caused by a sexual solicitation.
• Sexual danger is always more dangerous offline offcourse because it can only happen in a provate meeting, which is caused by the relationships the people build on the internet.
• People with eating disorders are now looking at websites that are glorifying their problems foe them to live easier with them.
• "Internet is written in ink". The majority of the things that you share on internet are unerasable.
• 1 in 7 kids said that they have been sexualty solicitated and they instantly delete them.
• Public life today is the things you have on social networks.
• Internet can be the gateway to depression and suicide.
• Kids should be seen as participants and not as victims.
• That parents are asking for thwir child's passwords sknce they can see their profile as a visitor.
• Internet created the greatest gap sonce the ages of rock.
• Little children are now having access to social networks like Club Penguins.
• There are chat groups in the internet about certain topics that people likes.

Things that have changed in technology since 2008:

• "Xanga", a social network, was used actively before. Nowadays I haven't heard of anybody that even knew about this social network.
• The cell phones used in this video are not used as much anymore (at least in my world) I haven't seen a person with those flip phones for a long times.
• Computers and other technology devices have evolved software wise.
• The Facebook template has chaged a lot since 2008.
• Nowadays there are more ways that parents can track down the things their children do on the internet.
• YouTube nowadays has more restrictions aout the videos that cna and can't be uploaded.
• Ways that children can expose their private life on the internet have emegred. Even more than before.
• Now, it is not necessary to go on a computer since you can access the internet on a smartphone.
• Securtiy softwarees have been created.
• There are more social networks.
• Nowadays there is public wi-fi.
• Now, predators are able to hack computers and the information in them.
• Parents are having more control over the online world.
• There are parent groups that have reunions and they talk about theor children's lives on the internet.
• Governments are instituting special organizations that patrol cyber bullying. Colombia has one.

          PARAGRAPHS:

1. What topic in the video sis you most strongly identify with and why?

I strongly identified with the part of the video about the boy that was refusing to give his password to his mother. I was in his situation many times when I created my Facebook about three years ago because my mother was asking for my password all the time to be able to see my personal things. The three girls talking on the video were in the same situation as the guy in the video and me because their moms wanted to take a deeper look in their personal stuff. I feel the same feeling like the guy and the three girls (whose names I do not remember with accuracy) because moms these days are so naive about the technological world that they want to monitor every single click their children make on the web because they think it is dangerous. Also, I would like to prevent the thing that happened to the boy I was talking about. I want to avoid a situation in which my parents find a video of me in a party or anything related to that and then making a reunion with other parents and sending the video via email to the parents of my friends. That is why I agree that parents should not have their children's passwords but they should be taking care of their children. I know that the purpose of this is to protect their children but if the parents trust their children in the first place, they should be sneaking into their personal stuff (in many countries that is considered illegal, including Colombia). If a child wants his/her parents to know something about their social network life, then the child should show the personally.

2. What topic in the video was the most UNLIKE to your own experiences online and why?

The topic in the video that was the most unlike to me was the story of Autumn Edows because I had never heard the story of a person that became famous by changing his/her identity. Here in Colombia, pages like MySpace are not very commonly used. When I saw the part where she said that she did not have any friends and that she wanted to become famous even if that costed to change her identity, she would, I was very stunned. I have never experienced a change in personality in exchange for fame and popularity and even less when it is popularity with people you don't even know, I think this is kind of ridiculous but it can change the life of a person, just like the girl on the video. Also, I have never encountered the page of some model (like Autumn Edows) or anything like that since technology has been a part of my life. Also, the pages that the straight A girl (can't remember her name either) was looking at (the ones that portrayed eating disorders as a good thing) are horrible because they are showing false things to their audiences. These are two examples of how internet can be very diceiving because you see pages like these of people and things you son't know, and immediately assume they are true. This is the source of many of the sexual cases that have been going on int he internet. People think that the people that they are talking to online are feeling real feeling for them.

4. What are the biggest benefits of being online, for you, personally?

Some of the biggest benefits of being online are that know you are more socially and actively aware of the things that happen around the world. You can go anytime to a news website and discover thing that you would have discovered ages before, this is an example of how ideas diffuse so rapidly. Also, being connected to a social network enables you to be out in the world by being inside. What I mean by this is that now the methods of communication are evolving so fast that know people do not have to send postcards or make long trips to see somebody because with all of the social networking there is nowadays people can meet and communicate a lot easier than before and that is beneficial. Also, for me being able to have so much resources to educate yourself and make projects for school for example is incredible because now teachers have more alternate and effective ways to teach and students have more alternate ways to learn than before and that is sign that the world is changing it's educational systems constantly. Taking a more specific look as to why it is beneficial to be online, I think that know there are many opportunities to get to know the university you want to go to. For example, software such as Naviance are now being used globally to explore collage options. Before people did not have those kinds of opportunities, but now you can be better prepared for you collage life; which is very important time period in your life. The last thing of this short list of things that I consider beneficial as to being online is the preparation that a person gets for a future world. We all know that the world is evolving and turning to technology, so being online opens the gates of many educational opportunities that may help us later. Starting now is not a bad idea, but it is never good to depend on technology.

Swiss School

          SUMAS (SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT SCHOOL)

Video #1:

• Is an innovative unique business school that is focused only on sustainability.

• Sumas is located in Switzerland, in the town of Gland. Gland is on the western side of the country, near Geneva and the border with France.

•It divides it’s education between regular business management education and scientific knowledge for sustainable development.

• Students from SUMAS arte being taught the importance of sustainability and how that can be applied to business management (bringing sustainability to everyday life jobs). It is the only business school in Europe that offers both the bachelor and the masters of business administration in sustainability management.

• They are also taught hands-on guidance on how to bring sustainability to the business environment. They need to understand the life cycle analysis to be able to start in the learning process at SUMAS.

• SUMAS also provides a great variety of freedom to their students. They are offered all kinds of sports (including water sports that are practiced  in the lake).

Video #2:

• The Case Study in this video is that the world is slowly deteriorating because of the innovations of the human race. There is a system called the Ecological Footprint Calculation, which tells you the surface are needed to produce the resources we consume in daily life and also to absorb the waste generated by the use of these resources.

• If we do not make any changes to the way we produce stuff, by 2050 we would need twice the surface area of the earth to be able to absorb the wastes and the carbon dioxide produces.

•We need to make sure that people are now using ecological sources that we can recycle, and most importantly, that people do.

• The European Commission has decided to put on a mayor action plan. They include a range of proposal and additional measures that focus on improving the products in the market for consumers; they need to make sure that whatever they label is understandable to the consumers. That is why the “Eco” label in Europe is so important.

Video #3:

• The 10 hottest years in the history of the planet have happened in the last 14 years. The hottest of all was 2005. The scientific consensus is that humans are causing global warming.

• They talk about how the ice caps and the snow in Mount Kilimanjaro for example are melting each time faster. The increase of temperature is causing stronger storms every year. Hurricane Katrina for example was one of the most devastating hurricanes that had struck in a very long time.

• They make a study about the melting of the arctic and the Antarctic and how the sea level would increase for at least 20 feet. They show many populated parts of the world that are at sea level and how they would be flooded, they also talk about the amount of refugees.

Video #4:

• They are mounting and flying a plane that can technically fly forever because it is powered by solar energy. All of the technologies that the airplane contains come from companies that do not belong to the aviation world. It was launched in the NASA.

RAN OUT OF TIME OF WATCHING THE REST OF THE VIDEOS

Activity #2:

I live in Bogotá, Colombia. Bogotá is not only the capital of Colombia but also its largest and most industrialized city. Industrialized cities can be very helpful for the economy of the country, but also they can be damaging to the environment. Today, Bogotá is ranked one of the most polluted cities in South America and even worldwide because of all the pollution emitted from transportation systems, factories and even from animal pollution from the farms that are located in the outskirts of this huge city. The problem that Bogotá has is that its corporations and companies do not take into consideration the amount of sustainability that it actually has. As a consequence, it takes everything to the extreme.

Sustainability can be implemented in Bogotá in many different ways. The systems of transportation can be fixed because about 100% of public transportation belong buses that pollute a lot. It can also take the ideas that other cities have implemented in the area of public transportation. Some of these ideas are: trolleys (Helsinki, Finland), subways (NYC), cable ways (Medellin, Colombia) and many others that exist around the world that have been proven to be sustainable and to lower the level of pollution. Also, they could disperse the factories to other areas of the department to at least have a sustainable territory within the city. Bogotá is located in the middle of the country, in a region of farmland (mainly Cundinamarca) so factories can be dispersed around this department to be able to have a more sustainable Bogotá.

GAFE

Gmail is a free, advertising supported email service provided by Google. Gmail can be accessed as a secure webmail, as via POP3 (post office protocols) or IMAP4 (internet message access protocols). Gmail was launched as an invitation only beta release on April 1, 2004. Later, in February 7, 2007 it became available to the general public. As of June 2012, it became the world's most used web-based email. It has over 425 million active users worldwide.

How to use it:

Gmail is one of the most efficient and easy to use mail services ever created. First, you have to create an accoubt. It is fairly easy because they ask you basic questions regarding security and access to the email adress. Ofcourse, it does ask you to identify the slanted letters to verify that you are no android. After you create an adress, you must create a profile since Gmail is also used a social network (Gmail includes a instant messaging system). Then you get this screen:

As you can see, you have different buttons on the left side that help you manage your account:

          • Compose (the one in the box)
          • Inbox
          • Starred
          • Sent Mail
          • Circles
          • Notes
          • Work
          • Important
          • All Mail
          • Spam
          • Trash
          • Personal
          • Receipts

Also, on each individual mail bar there are three mini clickers on the left hand side. The first one is the checked box, when you check a mial it becomes highlighted and you are able to move it to another tab or delete the mail. The second one is the one that is shaped like a star, when you click on that button you are starring that particular message. The third one is the importance button, you click on the ones that are considered important conversation to be able to find them quiclkly and efficiently.

Noticed that the theme is different than the normal theme you would find in a Gmail homepage. This is as it is because you get to customize your inbox. On the display destiny button you get the following options:

           • Comfortable
           • Cozy
           • Compact
(These three button are used to customize the thickness of each email bar you get, it goes from thickest to thinest as you go down).

           • Settings (In this option you can change the location, language, external content, browser connection, conversation view, desktop notifications, text styles and many other things).
           • Themes (Here you able to change color themes, general features, inbox style, accounts, and filters. There are HD themes and Custom themes).
           • Send feedback (With this button you have the opportunity to send an email to Google to send your own feedback about anything you wish).
           • Help (An additional window/tab will appear on your computer that talks about the damages that can be casued to Gmail).

Customization:

When you make a Gmail account, now you are able to use that account and cusatomize your Google Chrome application on your computer, create a direct account with YouTube and a direct account with Blogger. This makes it a lot easier for other Google users to interact with each other even if they are wishing to communicate outside of the actual social network/chat on Google. As mentiones prevoiusly, there is a button called "Themes" that allows you to personalize your account according to your tastes, but it also limited because it does not have an infinite number of themes.

What are some cool things it can do?:

Storage: Gmail service currently provides more than 10 GB of free storage per account, but users can rent additional storage that is shared between Picasa Web Albums and Google Drive. Gmail will provide 15 GB of storage can be rented apart from the 10 that is already provided by Gmail.

Gmail Labs: They are a sort of label that allow users to test new or experimental features on Gmail (bookmarking, keyboard shortcuts, etc.). Users can end up enabling their labs. This allows Gmail to obtain user input about new features that are being used by their clients.

Spam filter: It is a system of spam filtering that features a community-drivensystem that tells other Gmail users about emails that are being spammed numerous times by different users. This allows Gmail to identify future similar messages and spam it before it arrives to the users inbox.

Gmail mobile: It is the access to Gmail in smartphones. It is available in more than 40 different languages. It has the exact same features as the Gmail you use when you access it from a computer. The design is particular for all the features to fit effectively and creatively on the mobile screen.

Social Networking: Google Buzz is integrated with Gmail allowing users to share media as a social network (sharing links and status updates). In 2011 it was discontinued and replaced with Google +. The Gmail system also has a instant messaging system in which you can chat with other Gmail users while they are online. The messaging window is similar to the one seen in Facebook.

Google voice: It is similar to the voice system in Apple's IOS6 because you can record what you want to send to another person by using the option in the chat, the computer processes the information and the message appears on the chat window. You can also call another person with the Google Voice (similar to Skype).

Google chat: The Google chat in the instant messaging system that is provided in the Gmail account when logged in to the email. It allows you to see which users are online and chat with them just like in any other social network (Facebook for example).

Offline Google Mail: The offline Google mail is the common email that everybody knows. The messages you get to your inbox and to your chat window when you are offline are automatically saves until you log in to your account in later moments.

Gmail Search: Google made a linkage between Google Search and Gmail. By logging in into your Gmail account you can search trough the Web anything you want and you can bookmark certain searches or websites onto your Google account and store or share that information at any time as long as you are logged on.

How can teachers and students use Google at CNG:

I believe that teachers and students at CNG will be benefited by shifting to Google because all of the different apllications that Google has are beneficial for education. Now, they can be more interaction of students and teachers outside of school and projects can be made with other interesting tools that Google or one of it's apllications can provide. Also, there can be a common knowledge about this, that would be helpful because now every student and every teacher will now how to use the programs that are being used for teaching so there would be less problems regarding understanding of students of the material that is being taught.
